What’s wrong with the Saints?

SaintsThe only teams that are worse than the Saints are St. Louis and Miami, and that’s just because they haven’t had their bye week already.  Are we emotionally spent after last season?

Is it:

  1. Olindo Low Kick Mare -Sunday’s blocked kick was totally his fault. Peppers knocked it down with his elbow. I can’t really fault him for missing the long field goal, a kick we had no business attempting. Way to go, Chip Lohmiller.
  2. Devry Dropsies Henderson – That catch and run to the one was great, but that last drop/bounce into the hands of the Panthers was ridiculous. At least he looked like he was about to cry after the game.
  3. Jamal Front Door Brown – When he wasn’t getting run over, he was lining up incorrectly and costing us a touchdown.
  4. John the Other Front Door Stinchcomb – See Jamal Brown, without the illegal formation penalty.
  5. Drew Bad Decision Brees – Drew didn’t get sacked on Sunday, but still looked terrible. Is it his fault? Is it the O-line’s fault? Is it the wide receivers fault?
  6. Sean Predictable Payton – What’s with this short pass bullshit? Did you forget how to use Reggie? Where’s the play-action? What’s with all the slants and five-yard out passes? ALL OF WHICH ARE DROPPED, by the way. What’s with the conservative play calling? The long field goal attempts with a kicker who couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn?
  7. Robert Where Am I Meachem – Are you not that good? Can you not learn the playbook? Are you fat? Injured? We need someone to step up in our receiving corps. I don’t care if it’s Meachem, Copper, Moore, or Patten.

On the bright side, Eric Johnson looks pretty good and so does Mike Karney. Reggie’s games are getting better. Mike McKenzie bailed out the secondary. (I never thought I would appreciate McKenzie so much). Hollis Thomas looked good. Will Smith finally got a sack.

What do you think is wrong with the Saints? Do you still believe? I do.

  1. it’s definitely a case of good year hang over – to some degree.

I think that last year, people wanted to see N.O. succeed so badly and when the team is being “lifted” by large groups of people that gave them the extra edge they needed. it’s kind of like when you’re playing poker and getting just terrible cards that won’t hold up and then all of a sudden you get pocket aces and you win a big pot and get re-energized (that was for you BK)

now, with little moving forward in N.O. there is a bit of a hopelessness again. I don’t know why it’s so tough for teams to break “a losing culture” but let’s face it. the saints have been on the worst of it many years. good players are always expected to do to much and just get pulled down into the much. again, like pocket aces, they could re-energize you, or they might just win one pot and then you’re stuck again.

with 12 games left for the Saints, there is still a chance, but it is definitely getting more difficult to watch. the Saints need clearly need a spark to light their fire. what that is, i don’t know.

    now a few words about BK’s favorite game…. poker….

  2. Whenever I get pocket Aces, some bugger seems to always have kings or queens. I go all in, they call, and they flop trips. No aces come down on the flop, turn or river and I crash out.

That’s happened to me 3 times in the past year, twice in live play and once online. Makes you sick.

Anyhow, the Saints. I haven’t had the chance to watch a Saints game this year yet as the UK coverage hasn’t shown one, so I’m not sure what’s going on. I’m not sure I buy into this “energy” thing. I suspect from what I;ve been hearing that it’s down to 1) coaching and 2) Brees not being able to execute for whatever reason. Seems like Brees had a slightly better game last week (again, I’ve not seen the highlights yet, just going by reports) so maybe there’s hope to come out of it.

Saints are on the late Sunday game this week, so I doubt I’ll get to see them live even though it will be covered (kickoff is 1:30 AM Monday morning). I may record it on the SKY+ box (it’s like a tivo) if I can make room amongst the crappy soap operas, episodes of Dr Who, the recording of High School Musical 2, etc. Looking forward to watching them play well!

  3. I say this everytime, but if you cannot run the ball, and you cannot stop the run, you just aren’t very good. I feel like they are improving their run defense, but it still is lacking. Their inability to run is their biggest issue. Reggie Bush, I love you, but you have got to start running vertically. When my wife, who could give a shit yells “Stop running sideways!” there is an issue. I almost feel better about Stecker at this point. I runs straight ahead and very hard. He’s not that elusive, but he knows where to run. I like the idea of wearing them down with Stecker, and bringing Bush in once the defense is a little demoralized. Can also say this? And I realize this is going to make me sound like a dope…Reggie Bush falls down all the time. Is it out of the question that he needs a different type of cleat? Surely they would have thought of that, but I swear he falls down like 4 times a game. What else…Dave posited something a while back. He though Brees might be hurt, and it’s affected his ability to throw deep. I am coming around to this theory. He has no accuracy whatsoever when he throws a deep ball. I feel bad for him. Because I think teams know it, and i think they are sitting on the short routes. Which brings me to the final point. When you can’t run the ball, and you can’t get go verticle. The only way to move the chains is a ball control passing game. Which only works if you have sure-handed receivers. Which we don’t have. Except for Colston and Johnson.

But I thought this was their best game so far, and it seems like they are a different team than the one that played the first 3 games. And they can totally make the playoffs. Thank you, NFC South for having such crappy teams.

  4. I really hope Reggie Bush doesn’t end up being viewed as a “bust”. The trouble is that he was given sooooo much hype before the draft and before he’d played a down in the NFL that unless he played like some cross between Barry Sanders and Ladanian Tomlinson from the very first game, people were going to start muttering about how he isn’t any good because he had impossible hype to live up to.

He seems like a really nice bloke, too.

  5. If this was in the UK and the same situation was one a soccer team, the crowd would have been chanting for Martin after game 2. By last week they would have been holding demonstrations outside the ground demanding the manager and the entire board with the chairman leave.

I think US fans are so much more civilised. Except Philly fans of course.

  6. At least Martin has his eyes open. As far as I know, Brees has been throwing with his eyes-closed. Only Michael Jordan is good enough to do that.

  7. Keep Brees in until he gets hurt. Martin is not the answer, neither is Palko. I don’t think its him, I think its the line, especially Jamal Brown. Sorry Dave, I know he’s a Sooner, but the dude looks like a doormat out there. A scared doormat. Who lines up incorrectly and costs us a touchdown.

I think Brent has the best solution. Fix the running game. Call more runs. Call more fullback dives when it is third and one.

There’s a lot of Reggie haters out there. I’m not one of them, but I have to take my shoes off to count the number of times I scream “Stop Dancing” during a Saints game.

And we need a new kicker. It’s great that we can sign a new kicker during the week and he can play on Sunday. I don’t care who it is. Get someone else. Don’t let him wear #2.

  8. But I do think there is something wrong with Brees. He has not looked good on one deep ball this year. That’s not like him. Maybe more time would help, but if a guy like Drew Brees can’t be accurate and make good decisions, what does he have to offer. Those are the only two areas that he’s above average.

That and good looks. And cool scars. And he’s way better than Orton, so he’s still the best Purdue quarterback in the league.
